- Black Jack - when a player hits 21 with the two opening cards (also known as a natural 21)
- Burn - the top card of the deck or the shoe. This card is usually discarded by the dealer.
- Card Counting - technique used to increase the chances of winning. By counting the cards being dealt a player can estimate the value of the remaining cards in the deck.
- Doubling down - a possibility for a player to double his main bet against the dealer.
- Hard - any hand that hasn't got an ace being counted as 11 in it.
- Hit - get another card from the dealer.
- Hold - when you're satisfied with your hand and decide not to take another card you hold (also called stand).
- Hole card - the one of the dealer's starting cards card that stays hidden from the players until the round is finished.
- Insurance - an extra wager by the player when he thinks the dealer has a Black Jack.
- Natural 21 - when a player hits 21 with the two opening cards (also called Black Jack).
- Pat hand - a hard hand with a total value of 21 or more.
- Pat up cards - 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, A.
- Push - a draw, when the dealer and a player have the same total value.
- Shoe - when for or more decks of cards a shuffled together and used as one. Casinos do this to prevent card counting.
- Soft - a hand with an ace being counted as 11 in it.
- Split - when a player is dealt opening cards of the same value he has the option to split and play with two separate hands.
- Stand - when you're satisfied with your hand and decide not to take another card you hold (also called hold).
- Stiff up cards - 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
- Surrender - when a player has a bad hand he can forfeit and regain half the original bet.
